Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will be speaking at Casper College on Friday, said Lisa Icenogle, information coordinator for Casper College.Clinton will be speaking at 6:30 p.m. in the Administration Gymnasium, Icenogle said. The state basketball tournament previously reserved the larger Swede Erickson Thunderbird Gymnasium.The democratic caucuses are on Saturday morning at the Holiday Inn on the River. .

Saturday event standing up for women's rights

Local observers of International Women's Day are preparing a colourful but pointed message to be staged this Saturday. At least seven local organizations and their supporters will band together for a morning march entitled Stand Under Your Umbrella and Stand Up for Women's Rights. Rahno Godfrey, training and education co-ordinator for Belleville's Three Oaks Foundation, said marchers will paint, sew, or stick messages on their umbrellas for the morning march. "It is not just a women's event. It's for women and children and men of conscience ... the more numbers, the better," Godfrey said. "It's really important that Canadians be aware and involved in what's happening in their politics and their communities." She noted Canada in 1981 adopted the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination.

Oman 'regional pioneer for women's rights'

Muscat: Oman is one of the most advanced countries in the Gulf region as far as women's rights are concerned, according Dr Nora N. Alnahedh, resident representative (GCC) of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). In a written statement to Gulf News, the Muscat-based-senior UNFPA official said that since the Renaissance in 1970, the Omani government has actively promoted female education with impressive results. "Omani women have been working in various fields and actively participate in the national development process. Omani women also enjoy a lot of political, social and economic rights," she said on the occasion of International Women's Day on Saturday. The UN official added UNFPA's regional office had focused on the development of Omani women since it opened in 2006.

Confidence vote on Afghan mission expected for March

Rice: Time for action on women’s rights

US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice said Thursday that actions rather than words are needed to improve the position of women. Speaking to the press after appearing at a conference of women leaders in Brussels, she said, "Women who are in ‘non-traditional roles' say that the horizons are limitless. "But in order to make that true, it has to not just be a statement, it has to be an effort to really remove the barriers that prevent that from being true. That means educating girls, protecting girls, giving political rights to women." To find out more about dry cleaning they visited Hillyer Cleaners, a dry cleaner and tailoring shop in the Hubbell neighborhood. Carey Dunley's second-grade class took a trip to La Mie Bakery. They were making a real-life connection to a story they read in a new reading series called "Jalape�o Bagels." Hubbell second-grader Ava Logsdon's parents own La Mie. The second-grade students made cinnamon rolls, which they got to eat, and pizza dough with Joe Logsdon. They also got a quick tour of the kitchen ovens, the mixing machines and the walk-in refrigerator. King Seven fifth-graders were inducted into the NAACP's Youth Council elementary unit at a banquet Feb. 16. Through their involvement with this council, they will be learning more about the organization as well as leadership.

DUMMERSTON, Vt. -- So now the last piece in the grand plan for right-wing control of the United States has fallen into place. With Tuesday's 58-42 Senate vote, Associate Justice Samuel Alito joined the Supreme Court (and promptly and unexpectedly voted against the neo-cons on a death penalty case, to his credit). While my U.S. Senators, Patrick Leahy and James Jeffords, cast votes against Alito, they could not overcome the Republican majority who supported him. Looking back at court nominees over the past century, only Clarence Thomas received less Senate support than Alito. But it doesn't matter now. Conservatives now have a solid majority on the Supreme Court for decades to come. There will now be enough votes on the court to support expanded presidential power and to erode civil rights, labor and environmental protections and, in general, attempt to turn the clock back to the way America was circa 1900.
