The American Election and Islam

And therefore, it is also about Islam. If we say we are for women's rights or for human rights, then a candidate's gender, skin-color, or age may not be as important as their ideas about Islam. Do our candidates understand that we are really at war and that we cannot talk our way out of it? That charm, even of the spellbinding variety, is not enough, nor can we “take a meeting," Hollywood-style, or Tammany-Hall style, to set things right. Nor is simple, old-fashioned heroics the answer to the kind of Orwellian propaganda and guerilla-terrorism that America and our allies will continue to confront in the 21st century. Does our next President understand that we have to fight with everything we have and risk losing it all in order to hold onto any of it? Does our next President understand that a western concept of human rights is a universal vision and that America cannot protect such rights only for American women and then turn our backs on women in the Third World? Isolationism is cowardly, interventionism is both dangerous and almost doomed to failure; we need a new dialectical method to resolve these two seemingly intractable opposites.

He must go but the question which the new government will face is how to make his departure possible with minimum cost to political stability in the country. There are many a people who might feel angry if he is allowed to go easily. But then the priority is improving the system and not just punishing a dictator. The second issue relates to the huge financial burden which the new regime will inherit from the Musharraf-Aziz government. Islamabad has a huge budgetary deficit which was created due to problematic policies of our previous Citibanker-premier. The required price adjustment will make life miserable for the common man, especially in the short to medium term. Not making the adjustment, of course, will also create greater problems such as inflation. Let�s imagine that these problems have been solved and the new government has started to strategise about what to do next.

EQUAL WORKPLACE RIGHTS FOR WOMEN NOW

Jim Cunningham MP (Coventry South) raised workplace rights for women with the Government. Jim asked Harriet Harmon MP, Minister for Women, about what actions the Government has taken to reduce discrimination against women in the workplace. Ms Harmon stated that the Labour Government has done a huge amount to help reduce discrimination in the workplace but further work is needed. Ms Harmon said “we have helped women in the workplace by tackling low pay, a problem that mostly affects women, through the national minimum wage and tax credits, and we have helped to balance work and family, a requirement which also mostly affects women, through better maternity pay and leave and flexible working, but there is more to do". Concerned by the number of Court cases involving female members of staff fighting for equal pay including staff in the public sector, Jim Cunningham raised the issue of gender pay gaps with the Minister.

Nadia Abu Amar was an Israeli Arab living in the mixed Israeli city of Ramle. She left home when she was 14 — forced out by years of domestic violence by male relatives and facing the prospect of an unwanted arranged marriage. Like many young Muslim women in Israel she wanted more from life and this brought her into direct conflict with her family's conservative expectations. She escaped to halfway houses and women's shelters, most recently in Jerusalem. According to friends, despite the sadness of isolation from her family, she blossomed and did well at school. .

Fatima Nazari wants to change that. Nazari, an Afghan parliamentarian, is the driving force behind the country's first political party dedicated to women's rights and issues. She launched National Need on February 19 at a ceremony in Kabul, saying the party hopes to put women's rights at the forefront of the national political debate. It intends to run in the next parliamentary elections, likely in three years' time. "I believe women understand their own problems better than men would," she says, adding that National Need will seek to increase women's participation in politics and business. "We want to campaign for democracy, not only talk about democracy.

Comment: honour for Spitfire women rights a 68-year wrong

With a few words in the House of Commons, Gordon Brown has undertaken to put right a 68 year-old wrong. The surviving women — and the men — who ferried Spitfires and dozens of other aircraft types round Britain and beyond throughout World War II are to be recognised at last with the civilian equivalent of a campaign badge. Some of them are startled, to say the least, by so much attention after so long. I know this, being partly to blame. My book about them, Spitfire Women of World War II, seems to have been the catalyst for a short, sharp and successful campaign by Nigel Griffiths MP to ensure that their service and sacrifices aren’t forgotten. I’m thrilled for them, and hope they will agree that late is better than never. These were extraordinary pilots.
